The Joy is in the Making: Why Crafting Matters in a Digital World

As the world becomes more connected through screens, many of us are realizing just how important it is to disconnect — even if just for a little while. At Knot & Purl, our mantra, “The Joy is in the Making,” is more than a tagline. It’s a reminder of the deep satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands, surrounded by others who share that spark of creativity.

This new ethos idea grew out of inspiration from a summer spent with my 13 year old niece and reading Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation, which explores the challenges today’s kids face in a world dominated by smartphones and social media. While I may not be able to solve every problem, I can offer a safe, joyful space where families can unplug, recharge, and return to the magic of real-world connection.

Why Making Matters

Crafting isn’t just about glitter and glue. It’s a form of mindfulness. When you paint, weave, or piece together a mosaic, your hands are busy, your mind slows down, and you enter a state of calm focus.

For kids, this process builds:

  • Confidence – seeing their ideas take shape.
  • Problem-solving skills – figuring out how to turn a concept into reality.
  • Pride and resilience – learning that mistakes are part of the creative journey.

And for adults? It’s a rare chance to step away from endless notifications and to-do lists. The rhythm of making gives us space to breathe and reconnect — with ourselves, with loved ones, and with our community.

Creating Community, One Project at a Time

At Knot & Purl, we see this magic unfold every day.

  • At Crafty Kids Club, kids dive into vibrant, hands-on projects they’re proud to bring home.
  • Mahjong After Dark brings adults together for laughter, strategy, and connection.
  • Families gather around the craft table, sharing stories as they create something lasting.

Each of these moments reminds us why we do what we do: to create a welcoming place where creativity and community meet.

The Bigger Picture

When we say The Joy is in the Making, we’re talking about more than the final product.
It’s about:

  • The satisfaction of learning something new, one stitch or brushstroke at a time.
  • The calm that comes from being fully present in the act of making.
  • The magic of unplugging and rediscovering connection — to yourself and others.

As we head into a new season, we invite you to join us — whether for a drop-in crafting session, a special workshop, or even just to browse the studio and soak up inspiration.

Because in a world that moves fast and keeps us glued to screens, the act of making is a powerful way to slow down, recharge, and rediscover joy.
